Why July Is the Perfect Time to Reset Your Professional and Personal Goals
You’ve officially made it halfway through the year—congratulations! That’s no small feat. Now’s the perfect time to pause, reflect, and reset those goals you set back in January. Whether your goals were professional, personal, or a mix of both, midyear is a natural checkpoint to realign and re-evaluate. Let’s be honest: life gets messy. We all get bogged down by the daily grind, and sometimes the big-picture goals get buried under responsibilities and routine. That’s exactly why now—at the start of Q3—is such a critical moment to take a breath and ask: What’s actually working? What needs to shift?
My Own Midyear Reality Check
At the start of the year, I had one major goal: chill out. After years of juggling work, school, and family, I really tried to take my parents’ advice and slow down. Spoiler: I’m still working on it. Since then, I’ve started a blog, changed jobs, and continued supporting my husband in his career. So, while I might not have fully mastered the art of chilling out, I’ve started to feel more grounded. And that’s progress.
Enter: Micro-Goals
Let’s be real—my Type A personality wasn’t going to let me fully unplug. So, I’m trying something new: micro-goals. Right now, that looks like:
Choosing one hobby each month to explore. I’m finally giving some of those “maybe someday” ideas a chance.
Reading one physical book a month. (Yes, the goal is to actually chip away at my overflowing bookshelf.)
These aren’t huge, life-changing goals—but they’re small, manageable, and fulfilling. And that’s the point.
Pivoting Professionally
On the professional side, things look a little different. I recently changed jobs and I’m still defining what success looks like in my new role. My company has big potential for growth, which is both exciting and a bit overwhelming.
So, here’s my plan:
By the end of July, I’ll identify three core goals I want to achieve by year-end.
I’ll break each one down into quarterly and monthly micro-goals, so I can stay focused and track progress in a way that doesn’t feel overwhelming.
These goals will be quantifiable, but flexible—because if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that life doesn’t always follow a plan.
Adaptability Is Key
Setting goals isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. Sometimes goals need to be adjusted or even scrapped altogether, and that’s okay. (Just don’t scrap the metrics your boss is expecting—those still matter!) But maybe the path you thought would get you there needs to shift. Maybe the tools or timeline need an update. That’s what July is for: taking stock, making changes, and moving forward with intention.
Your Midyear Challenge
This week, I challenge you to sit down and revisit the goals you set in January. Where are you now? Where do you want to go next? And what micro-goals can help you get there? Progress isn’t about doing everything at once—it’s about doing the next right thing, one step at a time.
Let July be the reset you didn’t know you needed.
